On the drive back to Houston, Lacey let Sam replay the recording so he could hear everything Rags said. She listened with half an ear, chewing on her lip as her brain tried to make sense of it all.

By the time Sam finished and handed the recorder back to her, she had a plan.

“Remember I said we probably didn’t need to talk to the police?” she asked Sam. At his nod, she continued. “I changed my mind. I’d like to get a copy of the police report. I keep thinking that timing is the issue. I mean, consider this: did the murderer just happen to get in and out of the house while Rags was busy? If the goats hadn’t gotten out, would the killer have killed both Landis and Rags? Was it just a coincidence that Rags was late—or was it part of a plan?”

Sam hunched forward and crossed his arms over the back of Lacey’s seat. “You know what?” he said. “Those are very good questions.”

“Yes, they are,” Gar agreed. “And I think I might have the answers for you. Or at least some of them.” Lacey looked over at him sharply. “I have copies of the police report in my files.”

A huge grin spread over Lacey’s face. “Really? How convenient.”

“It is, isn’t it?” Gar chuckled. “It’ll take me a few minutes to dig them out.”

“That’s fine,” she said. “We’ve got time.”

While Gar drove, she got her notebook and started a new timeline. The earlier one she and Sam had done was more general, a basic order of who did what. Now she started a very specific one. She wrote down key points: what time Rags noticed the goats were out, what time he went to the house, what time he called the police. At the very least, the police report would show what time the 911 call came in, and it might have other details once the police interviewed Rags. If not, they’d have to talk to Rags again. She wished she’d thought of this before.

By the time they got back to the law office, it was after five and most people were gone for the day. Gar let them in and led them through the deserted front lobby to his office. He provided straight-backed chairs for them, then excused himself to go search the archives. When he returned, ten minutes later, he had a banker’s box labeled Kantor, 2011.

“Here we go,” he said. He set the box on his desk and started to dig through.

“Don’t you have digital records?” Lacey asked, surprised.

“Yeah, but I’d have to have one of the IT guys find it in the stored backups, and that wouldn’t happen until at least tomorrow. This will be quicker.”

Of course, Lacey thought. She kept forgetting this all happened eleven years ago. It was so current for her and Sam.

It didn’t take Gar long to find the file. It was a couple inches thick, banded together with thick rubber bands, several individual sections grouped by binder clips.
